One2World Technology Integration and Innovation Showcase: Callout for Presenters

In 2015-16 our first group of One to World students will enter the Middle School. They will be required to have a MacBook as per usual, but unlike any previous intake, they will be armed and dangerous in the use of iPads. Serious skill and seriously different to previous years. 

Proposal to all O2W teachers and students:

We have 16 regular Fish Bowl sessions which we thought we would like to give you and your students the opportunity to showcase your work, in particular for the benefit of our MS teachers. (Teachers please note that Friday May 22 is Sports Day!)

Sessions Types:

The 16 sessions over the O2W Week will (at this stage) be comprised of the following session types, in addition to a student panel.  

• Teacher presentations about an effective use of technology that is integrated (I have heard so many of these this year...please consider sharing. 10-40 mins, you choose)
• Students Team Presentations. Theme: "Learning we are passionate about...". This is a formal/semi-formal presentation that has structure to it. It could also follow more of a Workshop type format too though. 
• Open Classroom - where teachers and admin visit your classroom and showcasing technology integration. A snapshot of life in your classroom.

+ Student Panel EdTech plans on assembling a 9 person student panel to respond to questions or topics raised by teachers who attend. The student panel will scheduled to occur twice during O2W Week. You can nominate up to 3 students to participate per Form submitted. 

You can submit a Form for each of these opportunities. If you decide to enter your own presentation, as well as an offer to host an Open House, you will need to submit this form twice in that case. 

Session Structure:

4 days, 16 sessions (4 per day) - 8.20; 10.20; 12:35; 2.05 (i.e. regular Fish Bowl times)

You will have the opportunity to let us know what would work for you though. 

Obligation to participate? 

No. None whatsoever. But it will be a great way to celebrate and share your successes and experiences if you do!!   

21C Learning 7th Annual Conference Presentation - First Year Lessons from One to World : a 1:1 iPad program for Elementary students

Note: The following presentation is from the 7th Annual 21C Learning Hong Kong Conference 2014. Presented on December 12 and 13 by Ben Summerton, on behalf of the KIS EdTech team 2012-15.

Description: In 2013-14 KIS introduced 'One to World', a 1:1 iPad program that adopted as it's motto: 'creative, inspire, redefine'. This presentation summarises key observations and findings from the consultation and design aspects of One to World, through to it's implementation. The focus will then shift to examining how One to World has impacted student learning for our Grade 3 and 4 students participating in One to World, and how it is recasting the role of the teacher.

The Hour of Code - Computer Science Education Week

The Goals for the Session is to provide teachers with an introduction to computer science aimed to demystify "code," show that anyone can learn the basics, and provide information on why students should learn code. 

Student Benefits:

• Be exposed to a new way of understanding their world; see the role of computer science in their daily lives. 
• Gain vital, transferable skills that can be used in other areas (problem solving, critical thinking, decision-making, creativity, and innovation skills). 
• Be prepared for future STEM careers.

This is a guide to do more advanced searching using the Google search engine, we do not dive into all features, but have selected out some especially useful ones. More will be covered in The Fish Bowl for KIS teachers choosing to attend.

This session is activity driven, and begins easy, branching out and dragging more layers into the search. Based on a topic (Ebola Virus), participants take a copy of the Google presentation (as below), select a topic of their own, and then use the presentation as their own workbook, pasting in their search results as they progress.

Get Published: The Blogger Conclusion

The image to the left is a bunch of piles.  They are sticks, but imagine that the sticks were finished student assignments.  The student picks up their pile, parts of the pile makes it home neatly in a folder.  Some of the pile makes it home, crumpled up in the student's backpack.  Other parts of the pile are never seen again.

How do we get the good stuff home?  

The answer is Publishing.  Blogger, is a blogging platform that all students at KIS have accounts for, attached to their KIS Emails.  Blogging is Publishing.  

Are your students writing? Making movies? Drawing? Taking photos? Recording their voices?  These can all be added to your Blog, easily.

If so, Blogger is their "one stop shop" to publish all of their work.

Goal: Familiarize teachers with Blogger's tools and capabilities, and clarify the conventions used at KIS.

Pages is a great word processor, but it makes sharing cross-platforms difficult.  Google Docs, however, has more powerful features, and is much easier to share to others.

The Goal of this session is to improve communication, collaboration, and quality of feedback.

Participants

All Middle and High School teachers
This session is designed for teachers at Korea International School, Pangyo and Seoul Campus, South Korea. All teachers in Middle and High School are expected to have Outcome 5 verified, as required by Building Principals to ensure consistency and accuracy regarding grading and assessment for the start of the 2014-15 academic year.

Outcomes:

In this session you will achieve the following:

1. Set Grading Term Weight in PowerSchool (Middle and High School)
2. Set Set Grading Categories according to class/Department agreements (Middle and High School)
3. Complete Gradebook Setup in Schoology (Elementary, Middle and High School)
4. Have 1-4 verified by member of KIS EdTech Department (Middle and High School)

 Procedure:

Open PowerSchool Gradebook, and select your first Course for 2014-15

• Grade Setup
• Reporting Term Weights
• C1 and C2 (Course, Semester 1/2)
• 100% Middle School, Grade 6 only)
• 90% (Middle School, Grade 7-9
• 85% (High School including AP courses)

• E1 and E2 (Exam, Semester 1/2)
• Total Points (this is the default)

Spreadsheet to department category weights

• Categories
• Preparation: In left side bar, in the 'Categories' box, use the + symbol to add new Grade Categories if your required Categories are not already populated.

• Setup Categories Weights: Now in your Grade Setup, add your C1 and C2 Categories and associated weights. The percentage applied must equal 100% (i.e. 100% of the amount given to C1/C2

• Do you this same setup for multiple Courses? It's easy to copy this 1 perfect setup. On C1, right select using your trackpad or mouse, and Copy Grade Setup -- Entire Class. Check the boxes for the Courses you want this configuration sent to. 

• Complete any/all other setup in PowerSchool

Rounding

All Gradebooks should be set to Round grades to 1 decimal.

2. Schoology

Schoology integration with PowerSchool is very new at KIS. As such, we are trialling the integrated Gradebooks. 

• Schoology will send any grade you give to PowerSchool, live.
• PowerSchool does not however recognise the Grading Category that is applied inside Schoology, requiring this small piece of double handling. i.e. Once a grade is posted you need to go to PowerSchool Gradebook and apply the correct category to your synched grade item. Annoying....yes. But better than double entering every grade for every student.
• PowerSchool is for now the only definitive reference for student's Overall Semester grades. Think of Schoology right now as a synched spreadsheet that makes it easier to create, collect and grade assessments. 

For each of your Courses, you are however required to setup your Gradebook, in the same manner as PowerSchool. This is for the duration of 2014-15 so that we can assess the success of this part of Schoology. 

It's easy to do:

1. Go to your Course
2. Gradebook
3. Gradebook Setup
4. Next to Grading Periods & Final Weights > Select EDIT
5. Select C1 and E1, and deselect any other periods
6. Check the box for Weight Categories and enter each Category you have. 

7. Select Grade Scale 'KIS...or AP'

8. Enter all values in line with your PowerSchool setup. 

Finish! Now have your Setups checked by a member of EdTech. Please complete the Exit Survey (Fish Food) to have your attendance recorded for verification purposes as well as PD hours.

This is a descriptive, but reasonably fast paced guide to creating and grading assignments in Schoology. Feel free to get the jump on this; however be advised that this will be the topic of our next Fish Bowl session (next week).

Schoology: Grading and Assessment 

Regardless of what capacity in which you use Schoology, one common element is that it makes learning experiences simpler for teachers, students and parents to engage in as a community. Schoology adopts elements of social media, and combines it with all the features one would expect of a course manager, such as grading, assessment, calendars, and reminders. It also includes a direct (individual) or group messenger. This session in The Fish Bowl focuses primarily on the basics of Schoology, but then focusing on Grading and Assessment in a little more detail.

To familiarize yourself with Schoology, log in and take a look at the following:

• Settings - Click on the triangle to the right of your name. Pay close attention to Notifications and Account Settings. 
• Home - Click Home and notice you receive all Schoology updates in one place.
• Upcoming - All assignments and events will appear in the far right column.
• Course - An official class created in PowerSchool. Members can only be modified by PowerSchool administrators.
• Group - A group can be created by any user and for any activity (club, team, common interest). Membership to the group can be decided on by the group's creator.
• Post - Similar to a Facebook status update. In the home screen you may post to multiple courses & groups with one post. Within a course or group you post will only be seen by that course or group.
• Course Options - This popup menu is available in every course and allows you to customize the settings of the course. In the Privacy tab please change the Default landing page to Updates.

Below is the guide EdTech created in 2013-14 that helps to explain some of the basic landscape of Schoology. We will demonstrate this is our session with live examples of course. This guide is for your reference and convenience.

1. Grading 

• You can grade student work either by inputting your assessment scores directly into the Gradebook, or by using a Rubric, which auto-calculates and records for you. This Gradebook can be exported as a spreadsheet too. 
• Grade Scales are available to use (currently), which mirror the grade scales in PowerSchool (both the default A-F; and AP Scale) 
• Grading can take the form of Badges to 'gamify' learning and recognise achievement. This is being used in particular in the ES, and once created, can be shared. 

2. Assessment

• Assignment setup and distribution to a single class or multiple classes (in 1 click)
• Pre-load assignment with a scheduled 'go-live' date and time 
• Create 'Grading Groups' for differentiated assessment or learning experiences (such as Discussions). 

3. Communication 

• Parents will be able to view activity for all courses and groups their child is a member of. 
• Make sure parents have adjusted their settings to receive email or SMS.
• You can easily send home notices, newsletters and post items as calendar events to keep parents informed of what is going on in your class.
